sir,

I have the honour to report that steps have been taken, upon the recommendation of the Medical Board, to invalid from the service Miss E. Maker, Matron at the Government Civil Hospital.

2.

The ladies whose names I have considered in connect- -ion with the vacant post are, in order of seniority, Miss A. 2. Gorham, with service from March, 1899, Miss M. A. Lee, with service from March, 1903, and Mise M. Slom, with service from March, 1907.

3.

I am advised that Miss Gorham has not the necessary physique, that she lacks initiative and power of disciplinary control. It has been suggested to me that she would not wish to be considered in connection with the appointment, though I am unable to vouch for this, as she is absent from the Colony on leave

4.

I am similarly advised that Miss Lee is deficient

in the requisite qualifications. I attach a copy of correspondence with her on the subject, together with copies of reports by the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, and Matron of the Civil Hospital, reports which the Principal Civil Medical Officer fully

endorses.

5.

I am informed on the other hand that Miss Sloan has essentially the qualities required in a Matron, that she is tactful.

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

WALTER LONG, M. P.,
